Tutorfairs Foundation On-Demand Review

Tutorfair's Foundation On-Demand Review As one of the Founders of Tutorfair, my mission has been to make tutoring fair for all.      Last  week the Foundation signed off the final report of our pilot study for Tutorfair On-Demand with Nesta, so I thought it would be a good time to reflect on the  learning we’ve seen from this pilot. Why did we start On-Demand? We created On-Demand for Nesta, the innovation foundation. They had noticed in 2016 that volunteering projects were making a real difference in education but were not reaching large  areas of the country.  We took up the challenge because we thought the solution might also fix an issue for the Tutorfair Foundation.   We had lots of tutors trying to volunteer  who we were unable to place  most in our projects with schools.  The On-Demand app would let  volunteers anywhere in the country answer questions whenever they wanted. What have we found? Fast forward to 2019 and we now have a real live service that works. Pupils from schools who sign-up can access a tutor for GCSE maths instantly on their phones.  They feel happy with the help they get and their teacher can see what they struggled with. Volunteers can help when and where they are able to, without needing to make complex commitments. The Foundation team can train the volunteers online and monitor for quality and safeguarding.   Now that hundreds of students and volunteers and 30 schools have used it we have loads of great feedback on how to make it all better. What’s most exciting is that we’re starting to find from our small sample of students in the pilot that students who used the app more frequently saw some grade improvement.   One of the most important things moving forward to more schools and more students will be proving this result to be statistically significant. What next? As we wrap up the pilot study we are really excited with the potential for On Demand.  We feel confident that it will  be shown make a real difference to grades when we can do a full proof of concept.   This would mean for our volunteers that they are making a measurable contribution to addressing educational inequality.  When we can prove that we make an impact, there is so much potential to extend to new students and subjects and for this to be a whole new way for teachers and tutors to work together. This does two things.Firstly, it means the teacher is aware of the extra support your child is receiving, and so they can adjust their own teaching accordingly.Secondly, it means they can possibly provide you with useful materials, such as the curriculum or past exam papers, which the tutor can use to personalise your child’s lessons.Remember, your child’s teacher isn’t going to mind that you’re hiring a tutor. 6 Science Scholarships for STEM Majors Tips from an Irvine College Consultant:   6 Science Scholarships for STEM Majors Science and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) are becoming more and more popular as a field of study at the college level. Additionally, there are many entry-level job opportunities in the fields of science and technology. It’s no wonder why students want to study these fields in college but first they have to find a way to pay for tuition. Every penny counts when it comes to paying tuition and fees. Regardless of the specific scientific field, students should look at every scholarship option available to them; there are many large and small scholarships for students interested in studying science and technology (READ: College Scholarships 101: Burgers and Donuts?). 1. American Chemical Society Scholars Program This scholarship is geared for high school seniors as well as college students who happen to be a minority. As one would guess from the title, this program will help students study chemistry or a major field of study related to chemistry, including environmental science and chemical technology.  The American Chemical Society Scholars offers a maximum award of $20,000 ($5,000 per year over a period of four years.) 2. Davidson Fellows Scholarship This scholarship is specifically for students who are 17 years of age or younger and who have completed projects in math or science fields (as well as literature, music, and philosophy). In order to successfully apply to the scholarship, students will need to prove that their project has the potential to make a significant and positive contribution to the community or society at large.  The maximum award is $50,000. 3. EngineerGirl! Essay Contest This scholarship asks girls and boys alike to write an essay about a different subject each year. Xerox Technical Minority Scholarship Program This program is geared toward students who have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (that’s a B average) and who are interested in studying engineering, chemistry, or other scientific fields. This scholarship is meant to be used by minority students in order to increase their advancement in these innovative fields. Students must currently be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate school. A Timeline Study Guide for the SAT SAT Study Timeline If you are taking the SAT this fall, winter or spring (here are the official SAT Registration Dates and deadlines), hopefully you have already started studying. If not, look at this timeline to give yourself the best chance at success. ASAP: Take a practice test on the College Board TM website. In order to know how and what to study, you need to know how many improvement points you need to reach your goal (READ: 5 Awesome SAT Apps). Later Today: Make a list of colleges and universities that you want to apply to and then look up what your minimum score should be. Be careful here because schools like University of California use conversion charts. Make sure that your calculations are correct. Remember, the minimum score is just that. Try to shoot for 100-200 points above the minimum to give yourself a good shot. Tomorrow: Assess your strengths and weaknesses. If you got a score of 750 in math but a 510 in the verbal sections and your dream school requires a minimum or 600 on both, you will need to focus your time on the Critical Reading and Writing sections. Also, beware of your scores of the Essay portion. Remember, your essay has two graders. So, if your score report states that you received a “6”, this is really a “3” (If you received a “12”, then you actually got a “6”, the highest score). Though the essay is now optional, its still a good idea to prepare for it whether or not you plan on doing it. Why? Because many college courses administer essay tests and it will be a good way to see if youre prepared or not for that (READ: 8 Tips for the Optional SAT Essay). Find a Tutor: Be sure to mention the parts that you need to focus on the most. If you are taking the SAT in October, there is no time to waste. Ask mom if you can borrow her kitchen timer and give yourself either 25, 20 or 10 minutes for each section according to the directions. The Week Before the Test: Go over any concepts or test-taking strategies that have been a consistent problem. Schedule an extra session with your tutor if possible and commit yourself to conquering the SAT this fall (READ: 7 Tips to Maximize Your Tutoring Sessions). The Night Before the Test: make sure you have everything you need in a bag by the door. You won’t have time in the morning so make sure you have everything such as your ID, any paperwork etc Don’t study the night before, you will just stress yourself out. Rather, eat a high protein meal with plenty of fruit and veggies and lots of water (FYI soda does not count as water). Go to bed early so that you get 8-9 hours of sleep (READ: Coping with Stress as a Teen). The Day Of: Get there early and do your best. Taking the SAT Later than this Fall If you are planning ahead you might be taking the SAT in June. Save yourself some stress and start your study timeline now. Today: Take that College Board TM practice test as mentioned above. Next Week: Make that college list and asses your strengths and weaknesses as mentioned above. Two Weeks From Now: Arrange for a tutor. In your case, you will have more weeks of study so you will likely get by with 2-3 hours a week of self study assuming you are consistent throughout the year. Keep in mind that most students will not study for standardized tests much in September because those first few weeks of school are tough. Use your winter break wisely! Throughout the Summer (If youre taking it next year): Take a practice test every other week until you have reached your top score. If you haven’t reached that top goal yet, talk with your tutor about what is and is not working and she or he can help you focus on those issues.
